Capturing stories of play from our multicultural communities and developing a cultural play trail in the central city
Te Kōrero Tākaro Stories of Play – audio history, community events, cultural play trail
This project is a collaboration between Gap Filler, Our Stories Project and InCommon.
Gap Filler create engaging, experimental and playful encounters to connect people to place. Our Stories use storytelling to connect communities and make local history accessible. InCommon is a campaign developed in response to the Christchurch Mosque attacks – celebrating diversity and inclusiveness.
This project is
– Audio history, uncovering traditional games and stories of play from our multicultural communities.
– Community events, coming together to showcase and celebrate play.
– A cultural play trail in the central city. 3 or 4 installations that invite play in our city and celebrate the people that live here
The play trail…
We’re creating this project with multicultural communities, we’re teaching and supporting rangatahi to interview their elders about games and play. From these stories we are developing a play trail featuring….
– a projection work based on foot games ie Hacky Sack (America), Chapteh (Singapore), Jegichagi (Korea) and an Eritrean version.
– a pavement game based on Snakes and Ladders (India).
– a marble game based on various cultures.
– Pani (Fiji) at The Commons
– stories of other games and play will be available as audio that people can listen to while engaging with the trail.
The play trail will be installed in the central city and launched on Race Relations Day, 21st March. The trail will remain in place for 2 months. Where possible installations will be gifted back to the communities so they can be used again.
