July 9, 2013

Sorry folks, OPEN STREETS has been postponed due to July 14th imminent nasty weather. New date is September 29, 2013. CPC will be back then.

Gap Filler’s Cycle-Powered Cinema returns this weekend, for one day only. A real crowd-pleaser when it was first launched in February 2012, Gap Filler is running “Cycle-Powered Cinema – Take 2” in conjunction with the Open Streets event this Sunday 14 July, 10am – 4pm.

Located inside a vacant shop on New Regent Street people can bring along their own bicycles (they need to be 24” wheel or larger, ideally slick or low-tread tyres), or use ones already set up and using pedal-power generate electricity to run a data projector to screen films. Thanks to generous support from the New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand short films will be screening on the half hour so come along and experience some good ol’ kiwi ingenuity while checking out some good ol’ kiwi creativity!

Gap Filler are relaunching the Cycle-Powered Cinema in the hope that there will be a local community group who would like to be gifted the setup so they can organise and oversee its future use by groups in Christchurch and around New Zealand.

“We have had interest from all around the country from groups who want to run the Cycle-Powered Cinema setup for a variety of community events. It’s a great community-spirit builder”, says Trent Hiles, Gap Filler project coordinator, “as seen in the launch of this project in early 2012. We had people from a wide cross-section of the community attend the screenings. Unsurprisingly the cycling community – roadies, mountain bikers, commuters – were out in force. For many of them it was the first time they had experienced a Gap Filler project. It introduced a new audience to Gap Filler, which ultimately flowed on to increased awareness of, and participation in future Gap projects”.
