Volunteer

What we do is only possible with a massive amount of volunteer support. We need help across all stages of our projects. Tasks are massively varied and we try to use the skills you have to offer. You’ll get to meet all sorts of people and help make your city a better place. We have listed some of the volunteer opportunities below – if you are interested in these, or have something else to offer, then please sign up for our volunteer list or contact us directly!

Working Bees

We run (fairly) regular working bees at the weekends over Spring and Summer. During these sessions you can help maintain and care for projects with tasks like painting, weeding, cleaning up and building. As a sweet bonus we usually finish up with a sausage sizzle or pizza! Times and dates are sent out in the general and volunteer newsletters. You can either show up on the day or email us beforehand at fillthegap@gapfiller.org.nz.

Corporate Volunteer Days

We regularly host tailored volunteer days for companies and organised groups who would like to give their employees/members a chance to have a day away from their normal routine. This is an awesome way of getting people connecting with each other, giving back to the community and it’s also a lot of fun! We’ve had many organisations volunteer with us, BNZ, Telecom, Chevron, NZ Army and Kiwibank, amongst others. If you’re interested in your company doing a volunteer day, please email: fillthegap@gapfiller.org.nz.

Regular Roles

Handy-People:People who can support our Handy-man in some tasks. Tasks will include things like, fixing sites and/or building new items for upcoming or existing sites. Practical skills a must. The only thing we can promise is the tasks change and no shift will ever be the same!

Shepherds: Sometimes we have big groups visiting for a workshop, tour or volunteer opportunity. We are a small group and need some fabulous people who we can train up to support us in keeping these groups safe and happy!

Green-Fingered Gods & Goddesses: Gap Filler has a number of sites around town that include some wonderful flora and fauna. We need a little bit of help taking care of these gifts from nature. Interest and/or experience in gardening is a must. If you can help us out with this role we will certainly bow down to you!

Official Office Officer: Our office (always) needs a little bit of a straighten-up! There are quite a few administration tasks that we need some assistance with; from archiving, establishing a virtual book, answering general enquires and so much more. Some admin experience is preferred. Help us lay down the law in the office!
Host(ess) with the Mostess: We need some fabulous people to help us host our lovely guests at all the sweet events we put on (about one a month). Tasks could include set-up/pack-down, cooking and/or serving refreshments, way-finding or admin like registrations and prize-givings. Events experience would be an advantage but is not necessary. Are you a host with the mostess?

Oscar the Grouch:Well not really, but we do need a little bit of help keeping our bins under control. With our events, markets and everyday food collective use, this is a fairly significant job. Bins need to be emptied, sorted, cleaned and put out for pick-up at the right time. Being grouchy is optional.

BNZ

A real highlight was being able to get the whole team together to work on something together. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and really valued being able to do something to better our community. Richard and the other volunteers at Gap Filler were awesome and made us feel really welcomed and were so grateful for our help.
